Pétanque
Pétanque, the most popular pastime in southern France, is very similar
to Italy’s bocce ball and somewhat similar to horseshoes and shuffleboard.
Players toss or roll stainless steel balls (boules) toward a small wooden ball
(cochonnet – the “piglet”), trying to get as close as possible.
The game originated in Provence in the early 1900s, and is traditionally enjoyed
with a glass of pastis, an anise-flavored alcohol mixed with cold water.
Members of Austin’s Alliance Française will bring along
their boules and cochonnets and teach anyone who would like to come early
to play pétanque on the grounds of the French Legation. The game
is simple and fun, and you’ll be shouting “bravo!” after
a good toss or groaning in dismay as someone knocks your boule away from
the cochonnet within minutes. We’ll make sure the atmosphere is
appropriate by providing pastis, olives, and other southern France apéritif
necessities.
